I've enjoyed being around trains since age 7. The main CSX line runs behind the neighborhood where I currently live. I have lived here for over 18 years. Over this time, I've seen a wide variety of diesel power going through, including GP38s, GP40s, SD40s (including dash-2s), B40-8s, C40-8s, C40-8Ws, AC4400s, and other types.
In July of 1994, I joined the Chesapeake Bay & Western Railroaders Club (thanks to my good friend, Jerry Murphy). Jerry had brought me there the April before, and I learned that he had been a member since he was 16. Both of us continue to be members of this fine club. CB&W maintains a good membership, and each and every member has his or her unique talent (whether it be the knowledge of a particular railroad or how to wire in a section of track).
Most of the trains that travel through Newport News are coal trains. These trains usually begin their long journey from West Virginia. The existence of the railroad in our city is due to the responsibility of Colis P. Hunnington, who also started Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.
I have been informed by Jerry Murphy, a member of CB&W, that Alco is getting ready to re-enter the locomotive manufacturing business! Stay tuned for further information.
7-7-99 -Norfolk Southern and CSX are currently acquiring Conrail locomotives. For CSX, this means a change of pace as they beef up their EMD stock. Check the roster link for the latest.
